Artist Statement
Traversing the boundaries between loss and regeneration, silence and vocalization, the visible and the invisible, I develop video installations and social practices that seek out the overlooked “absences” within society, opening them up to polyphonic dialogue.
In recent years, my practice has focused on collaborative research with individuals whose experiences are often marginalized or difficult to articulate in public discourse—such as those bereaved by suicide, individuals experiencing physical loss, and those who have faced discrimination. Rather than forcing the audience to simply “relive” the pain of others, my work constructs spaces of care and testimony where we can confront and share these vulnerabilities together.
Rooted in my extensive background as a director of commercial films and music videos, my methodology hacks and integrates the “language of fiction” found in commercial media with the “documentary approach” necessary for weaving together the voices of real people. Through this process, I attempt to elevate personal, intimate memories into public archives that can be shared and remembered by society as a whole.

Ryo Shimizu
Contemporary Artist. Born in Tokyo, 1976.
Representative Director of Void Arts Projects.
After working as a director and screenwriter for commercial films and music videos since 2001, Shimizu shifted his focus to contemporary art in 2018. His practice utilizes a socially engaged approach that intersects video media with art projects. He places a strong emphasis on “archival practice”—exploring how fluid, socially engaged projects can be documented and connected to public memory. The documentation book of his 2024 project, Void Art: Absence and Polyphony, has been institutionalized and archived as a public resource in the art libraries of six major art institutions and universities in Japan.

プロフィール / 略歴
アーティスト・ステートメント
喪失と再生、沈黙と語り、可視と不可視。私はこれらの境界を横断しながら、社会の中で見過ごされた「不在」を掬い上げ、多声的な対話へとひらく映像インスタレーションおよび社会実践（ソーシャル・プラクティス）を展開しています。
近年は、自死遺族、身体機能の喪失、差別経験など、社会の中で語られにくい体験を持つ人々と協働・リサーチを実施。観客に「他者の痛み」を安易に追体験させるのではなく、共に痛みに向き合い、分かち合うための「ケアと証言の空間」を構築しています。
私の実践の根底には、長年コマーシャルやミュージックビデオの演出家として培ってきた映像言語があります。商業映像における「フィクションの語法」と、現実に生きる人々の声を編み上げる「ドキュメンタリー的手法」を融合・ハッキングすることで、個人のパーソナルな記憶を、社会全体で共有すべき公的な記憶（アーカイブ）へと昇華させることを試みています。

清水 伶 / SHIMIZU Ryo
現代美術家。1976年東京都生まれ。一般社団法人Void Arts Projects代表理事。
2001年より企業広告やミュージックビデオの企画演出・脚本家として活動した後、2018年より現代美術へ転身。映像メディアとアートプロジェクトを掛け合わせた社会実践的なアプローチを開始する。流動的なプロジェクトをいかに記述し、公的な記憶へ接続するかという「アーカイブの実践」にも注力しており、2024年に主宰したプロジェクトの記録集『ヴォイド・アート：不在と多声』は、東京都現代美術館（MOT）をはじめとする国内主要6機関の美術図書室に公的アーカイブとして配架されている。
